Psychogeographic Review - The Chalets of Farndon
I was alerted to the existence of the river chalets near Farndon by Psychogeographic Review reader, Rob, who wrote about them in his response to a piece I wrote after one of my River Dee walks. The chalets at Farndon are an expression of the ‘plotlander’ movement of the inter-war years whereby city dwellers acquired small plots of land in rural areas and built their own country retreats, largely free of any planning constraints. The movement effectively ended with the onset of the Second World War and the tighter town and country planning regime that was introduced in its aftermath.

The Old Bakehouse B & B Guest House
The Old Bakehouse is situated in the attractive village of Farndon about eight miles south of Chester on the banks of the River Dee, which forms the border with Wales. The building dates from about 1780 with later additions (and plumbing). It was originally a shop and a bakery known as ‘Harrison’s Stores’ and was in use as such until 1986 after which it was sympathetically converted into a family home.
The original bread ovens are still in the kitchen although no longer used for baking bread or for the villager’s turkeys at Christmas, which was another popular use!
